I’ve been on a perpetual quest to be well over the last decade. I’ve been hit with depression, vulvodynia, and a weird autoimmune disease that all forced me into deep despair, and then deep study, and ultimately committed action. I simply refuse to be unwell.
Thankfully, by education I am a researcher. As Dr. Terry Wahls says, “The internet has democratized education and anyone with decent intelligence needs to do their own research.” Why? Because there is a revolutionary new amount of information coming out of the labs, gene studies, and brain imaging that tells us we’ve been very wrong. We’ve been told we were stuck with our genes, that we need to rely on a pharmaceutical fix it model for our broken bodies. This is simply not true.
What do we know now that we didn’t know even ten years ago?
Our health relies on the health of our microbiome (our gut).
We’ve been wiping out our bodies’ first defense with bad food and the overuse of antibiotics.
Our genes are not stagnant. They interact with our food and lifestyle choices and circumstances.
We can turn our good genes on and off with our choices.
The mind and the body are POWERFULLY connected.
Dr. Wahls, a medical doctor who put Multiple Sclerosis into remission after she almost lost her practice and found herself in a reclined wheelchair says this, “It takes 30 years for the studies coming out of the labs to reach clinicians.” Now, I love doctors. I married one. But are you going to wait 30 years for your doctor to get the memo?
Get started on your own. Do CAREFUL research. There is a lot of nonsense out there. Find studies you trust or researchers you trust and see who else is saying the same thing. And, choose one thing to start on in your own home today.
The easiest way to start is to begin rebuilding your gut, or healing your microbiome. Fermented vegetables like sauerkraut are like superchargers. Dr. Joseph Mercola sent a sample of his homemade sauerkraut off to a lab and reported the findings of probiotics saying, “We had it analyzed. We found in a 4-6 ounce serving of the fermented vegetables there were literally ten trillion bacteria.”
This means that just 2 ounces of homemade sauerkraut has more probiotics than a whole bottle of 100 count probiotic capsules. Eating tons of probiotic foods was what began tipping my body into healing.
Here is a recipe for the easiest probiotic food I know:
Purchase red and white organic cabbage.
Wash, chop, and shred it in a food processor. I like to add pink sea salt for the minerals and garlic for anti-viral/yeast properties. Oregano is also very powerful.
Run jars through the dishwasher to sterilize.
Stuff into jars tightly and cover with spring water.
Screw on lids loosely. As cabbage ferments the gas will expand and you can shatter a jar.
Cover with a towel and stick on the counter for a few days.
When it’s ready, you can smell the sour smell. My kids run from the room!
At this point you can refrigerate.
I a bit on blue, non GMO corn chips every day.
Sneak the juice into soups (not too hot) or salad dressings for your kids.
Here’s an account of how this was the beginning of my healing vulvodynia. There is so much you can do to tip your body back into the healthy state it wants to be in. This is an easy start.
I get so many emails each week from women who are desperate for answers. They are out there! Just hard to find.
I’ve started working with small groups independently for a month at a time who are serious about becoming well. The next group begins January 2020. If you are looking for more guidance on your healing journey and you are ready to commit to being well, you can apply here:
