Hobby farming is not a livelihood. It isn't a fun way to fill your time. It is a search for substance. It is an answer to a feeling of disconnect with our natural world. It is a way of life and a set of values we want to impart to our kids. Homesteading faces the reality head on that being human is costly to the world.

Seasonal Shifts

Burst is what we have done this week. The Homestead is full of new animals that I feel ready and energized enough to care for well. After months of feeling like time moved slowly, suddenly there isn't enough time in the day to get everything done. It works out though because the days just got longer. It's still light when we feed the baby goat his last bottle and take the new puppy for his last perimeter walk of the day.

Today, I Don't Want to be a Homesteader

I don't want to go over and look at the empty paddocks where I failed animals in my charge. I don't have it in me today to try and replant the beds the deer invaded. And I do not want to hear that damned rooster this morning. This morning, I would love to go into an office and order my lunch from a restaurant where I never have to think about where it comes from. Today, I don't want to be a homesteader.
