Generosity runs deep in Starkville
You Raised $29,145 in THREE WEEKS!!!!
Which means we can also put on the needed gutters!!!
Last year, you saved one family's home...
Our Holiday Helping Hands Campaign raised enough money to save one Starkville family's home last year. This year, we have the opportunity to raise a roof for our entire community. The J. L. King center is located in Westside Park, right in the middle of Starkville's largest public housing neighborhood. Dr. Joan Butler, "The Woman with the Golden Pen," as I call her, has secured over half a million dollars in grant funding to provide programming on literacy, health, job preparation, and violence prevention that could be housed in exactly the neighborhood with the highest needs. There is only one problem...the roof is leaking like crazy.
Unfortunately, none of the grant money can be used for building repairs. But I have faith that people in Starkville understand something: WE ARE ALL CONNECTED. What happens in our lowest-income neighborhoods impacts our schools, our real estate, and our ability to recruit businesses. We need to care deeply about the entire community in order for it to continue to thrive.
I received three estimates for a new roof, and the middle estimate by local contractor Redwood Roofing seems the most reasonable. We need to raise $28,000 by December 28th to meet our goal. I KNOW that there are at least twenty-eight individuals, practitioners, churches, or organizations in Starkville who will help meet this goal. I also know there are hundreds of families who want to send a gift to our entire community this season.
Already, local businesses have stepped up, like Brantley Johnson at Climate Control, who will remove the heat/ac units and replace them on the new roof at the cost of rental for machines needed to do the job. He is also asking his distributor to consider donating new units, as the ones on the building are insufficient for that space. There are dozens of ways to help. Get the word out, share this story with the media and on social media, and come to our Holiday Open House on December 8th from 5-7pm to see the possibilities.
I believe in my community. I believe this project is as good as completed! I know we will step up, reach deep, and perform a good, old-fashioned, roof raising.
Let's raise a roof for our entire community this season!
